Medical Doctors' Knowledge of Dental Specialty: Implication for Referral

Summary:

The research goal is to assess Medical Doctors' knowledge of the various dental specialties and to determine if their past dental experience affects their level of knowledge. Resident Doctors and Medical Officers working in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Nigeria were surveyed with self-administered questionnaire in 2008. A total of 142 doctors responded to the questionnaire, giving a response rate of 71%. The female: male ratio was approximately 1:2.5. The designations of respondents were Senior Registrar 21.8%, Registrar 48.6% and Medical Officers 29.6%. The Departments that returned the questionnaire were Internal Medicine 21.1%, Surgery 19%, Paediatrics 15.5% Family Medicine 11.3%, Accident and Emergency 5.6%, Radiology 4.9%, Ophthalmology 8.5%, Pathology 5.6%, Anaesthesiology 5.6% and Mental Health 2.8% The mean knowledge score was 10.1±3.3. (Maximum score =21). Only a small percentage (5.6%) had a good knowledge (scored above 16), 79.6% had a fair knowledge (scored 8-15) and 14.8% had a very poor knowledge (scored less than 8). Doctor with history of previous dental treatment had better knowledge (P=0.03). The knowledge of Medical Doctors about the various areas in Dentistry is presently not satisfactory. Comprehensive care of patients, which includes prompt and appropriate referral, can be optimized by improvement of Doctors' knowledge of dental specialty through seminars and other educational interventions

Clinicl-and-experimental application of osteoplastic substances in extraction of retenial and dystopic lower third molars

Summary:

The research objective was to develop surgical methods of retenial and dystopic third lower molars extraction by means of modern osteoplastic substances. the used materials included advanced osteoplastic techniques. Application of osteoplastic substances in extraction of retenial and dystopic third lower molars reduced postoperative complications by 41,9 percent compared with those in the control group. the work gives close attention to the obtained data. It points out the high level of intensity of osteoreparative process. in conclusion there is a recommendation of complex application of described substances in clinical practice

97 patients with defects of front upper teeth were examined in order to study the influence of design of bridges prosthesis of upper front dentition on speech function. Morphometric, spectrographic, ultrasonic and computer research methods provided the reveal of more typical speech dysfunctions and establishment of interrelation with the size of the angle of inclination of upper front incisors. it gave opportunity to propose ways to overcome these disorders in patients with defects of upper front teeth

In the paper the problems of monitoring of teenagers health state in the conditions of educational reform: transition to profile training are reflected. During research it was established, that the majority of teenagers are not ready to an independent professional choice and profile training. Those teenagers who have chosen a profile training without the account of further professional choice, the risk a psychosomatic pathology formation is higher. the received results testify to necessity of obligatory monitoring of health state including an estimation of vegetative status, process of social adaptation, parametres of quality of life which are indicators of early psychosomatic diseases diagnostics. the decision of a problem of profile training choosing the future trade that demands from medical workers and psychologists of educational institutions carrying out annual periodic medical examination taking into account a prospective profile of training and professional factors, characteristic for each profession should be one of the primary goals of medical examination at school

Summary:

Clinical and morphophysiological changes in 150 adolescents and young adults with enuresis were under study. Nocturnal enuresis was determined in recruits born between 1996 and 2008. Examination of patients with enuresis enabled to reveal high level of incidence of urinary system and bladder. Objective criterion of nocturnal enuresis was considered to be the increase of prostate to 18,09±4,71 sm3. Besides, long disease course was characterized by decrease in level of general testosterone, FSH, nonspecific changes of daily EEG which are signs of regressive dysfunction of limbiсo-reticular formations

Immune status and antioxidant protection changes in women with urogenital clamidiosis

Summary:

The article presents the results of examination of 92 women with inflammatory process of urogenital system and the diagnosis of urogenital clamidiosis made for the first time. It points that the analysis of laboratory indices of both cellular and humoral immunity and antioxidant status of women with urogenital clamidiosis carried out before treatment has shown the active increase of relative ratio of T-cells and suppressor-cytotoxic T-cells and the decrease in their absolute values. The analysis has also revealed the increase of NO-cell subpopulation and concentration of immunoglobulin A and E, and activation of lipid peroxidation in the tendency of tocopherol acetase reduction that causes the significant decrease of body antioxidant protection
