Health status and quality of life of the frst-year medical university students

Summary:

Objective: to assess the health status and quality of life (QoL) of medical students of the frst year of study at a medical university. Material and methods. The study involved 612 frst-year students of Sechenov University who were enrolled in the “general medicine” specialization program. The medical and social characteristics were assessed using a questionnaire that included 42 questions related to the students’ demographics, lifestyle, academic workload, and knowledge of healthy living and health promotion. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire was used to evaluate the students’ QoL. The students’ health status was assessed based on the results of their preventive medical examinations. Results. The average age of the respondents was 18.3±1.3 years, the proportion of female students was 73.7%. In the structure of student morbidity, the frst four places were occupied by diseases of the nervous system, the eye and its accessory apparatus, the musculoskeletal system and respiratory organs, which accounted for 53.6% of the total number of detected diseases. The 1st health group and the main physical education group included 37.2% and 35.0% of the total number of students enrolled in the study, respectively. Relatively low indicators of scales characterizing the psychological component of students’ QoL have been revealed. The medians of the summary physical and psychological components were 95.0 and 54.0 points, respectively. Conclusion. Negative trends in the health status and QoL of frst-year medical students have been identifed, which can be attributed to the high academic workload and difculties of the adaptation period.
