Erythrocyte system in elderly: ageing aspects

Summary:

The purpose of the study was an assessment of erythrocyte system age-dependent characteristics in elderly population dwelling in the same territory during the time period equal to the average life span in the region. Material and Methods. We perform the compare of hematological parameters of 800 patients with hypertension and coronary heart disease hospitalized during 25-years period. Results. In senile patients, red blood cells and hemoglobin levels signifi- cantly decrease, but platelet characteristics remain intact. Revealed differenced are similar during all 25-year period of observation. Conclusion. Over the past 25 years, the trend of age-related decline in the number of red blood cells and hemoglobin has been preserved. The average hemoglobin content in erythrocyte (MCH) during the aging process tends to decrease, which has become statistically significant in recent years. The principal difference of the obtained data from the results of obtained 25 years ago is the absence of an age-related increase in the volume of erythrocytes and a higher level of the average concentration of hemoglobin in the erythrocyte.

Acousto-optical method of blood typing: the comparison of application of anti-A and anti-B monoclonal antibodies with standard hemagglutinating sera

Summary:

The aim of the article is a comparison of resolution of the acousto-optical method for blood typing for two types of reagents: monoclonal antibodies and standard hemagglutinating sera. Materials and Methods: The influence of the concentrations of reagents (monoclonal antibodies and standard hemagglutinating sera), of blood sample, which is to be tested, as well as of the duration of the ultrasonic action on the biological object upon the resolution of acousto-optical method were investigated. The peculiarity of this work is the application of digital photo images processing by pixel analysis previously proposed by the authors. Results: The optimal experimental conditions to obtain maximum of the resolution of the acousto-optical method were found, it creates the prerequisites for a reliable blood typing. Conclusions: The present paper is a further step in the development of acousto-optical method for determining human blood groups.

Currently the departments of quality control of blood centers evaluate the suitability for clinical use of erythrocyte-containing solutions indirectly by routine methods of the determination of hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit level, or hemolysis at the end of the period of storing. These methods can not directly characterize the state of membranes of preserved erythrocytes. The aim of the work is to study the changes of elasticity and surface potential of membranes of red blood cells of erythrocyte-containing solutions in storage for 35 days. Material and Methods. Two series of dry cytological preparations (smears) of erythrocytes have been investigated. The first group consisted of 8 samples of erythrocyte-containing solutions prepared on the day of preservation, and the second group included 20 samples prepared after the long term storage for 35 days at t=+4°C. Blood was stored in bags of «Baxter» company (USA) conserving with «CPDA-1». For atomic force microscopy five typical erythrocytes were selected and their elasticity was measured at 9 points of the membrane of each erythrocyte. Total number of measurements was 1296. Results. Average value of Young's modulus of the first group of samples was 1,81±0,02 (M±m) KPa. The second group showed 3,22±0,02 KPa statistically higher (p

Summary:

150 cadets ages 16 to 25years were under the obsrevation of adaptation of intravascular microcirculation component during the course of their military professional study.
The research data proved that active erythrocyte aggregation, the size of thrombocyte aggregates and the speed of thrombocyte aggregation are higher in the first-, second- and third-year cadets than in senior students. These findings are to be used in the assessment ofcadets' adaptation to the military service and the prognosis of their professional capacity.
